Challenge
Designing an application that’ll assist the super yacht owner to improve their mood during their stay on it.

Solution
People that own the most also have the most influence and power in the world. Their time and the money they spend is highly valuable to the world, since these affect a lot of people in the world. This lifestyle comes with a lot of stress and to relax these people take some time of by staying on their super yacht to get away from the world.

They have a big crew that take care of them, but it’s preferred to not be bothered by them and have some luxurious control over what you want to do and focus on one self.

Providing the owner with a mobile application that gives them control over the area they’re in gives them the power to effortlessly adjust it to their liking and relax. As mentioned before, the purpose of this application is to improve the mood of the user.

Challenges

Challenges

With A Bigger Circle being an agency that does a lot of business with the yacht industry it only made sense to take the opportunity and step in with a product no one has achieved to build before. An application that can control the entertainment in their surroundings, call their steward, adjust the room lighting, temperature and blinds to their liking and more.

For this project I did the UX, IX and UI design and took lead as project manager. During this project I worked with another designer and developers.

Main challenges of this project:
• The mobile (iOS) application needed to function as a remote.
• All actions should be able to be done with as little as possible interactions.
• The application needs to be modular. Meaning that features should be able to be added or removed, and there needs to be room for more content when needed to be added.
• It needs to support white labeling.
• The target audience can range (roughly) from 10 to 90 years old and are from all over the world. It should be accessible for all of them.

Homescreen

Homescreen

The homescreen shows the user everything they can do on the yacht. From browsing through the activities and playing them, to browsing their feed about whats’s nearby, what the chef is suggesting and everything about the yachts status.

Menu tabs
On the bottom are the 4 core pages of the app. Activities, Search, Space and Steward
• Activities - All online and offline activities that the user can partake in.
• Search - Go through all online content within movies, series, music and memories.
• Space - Controlling the climate control, lights and blinds in the area they’re in.
• Steward - To call over the users personal steward.

Areas

Areas

A super/luxury yacht is enormous. Soccer field enormous and it has multiple floors.

To bring some structure and logic in the system I’ve designed a system in which the big parts are called Areas which exist of Spaces. This way the user knows where they are and what devices they’re controlling. To minimise content only the spaces and areas that a user has access to is shown on their device.

Space

Space

With simple controls the user can quickly adjust the temperature of the area they’re in.

Next the user has the option to control the lights. These are setup as moods. Based on what they feel like, or what they want to do they’ll have the options right in front of them and they can turn these on/off. Swiping left shows all the blinds in the area to open or close.

No setup required
A personalised app like this would require a setup. In this case the user won’t be doing that. That’s the task of their personnel and stewards on board. Before the user gets on board their profile will be configured and made ready to be used via a CMS from which they can manage everything.

Playing a media item

Playing a media item

To play something the user first has to assign which space(s) it should be playing in and if they want their preferred mood played.

Media player

Media player

The right screen is where the user starts. Users can control the media here. Scrolling down reveals the queue of media.

Swiping right brings you to the Space tab where you have quick access to the temperature, mood and where it’s playing in.
